In Michigan, all gambling is illegal unless for charity or organised by a state regulated casinos. However, it wasn't too difficult for Michigan police to track down this particular poker get together as the Grand Rapids Poker Club game had been openly advertising it to the public days in advance.
'They were so open about it that it was really unusual,' state police Lt. Curt Schram said. 'They put out fliers, advertised on Craigslist and were trying to bring people in by telling them it was all legal.'
The extent of the organisers openess became all too apparent on Saturday, after authorities raiding the conference room at the Kentwood Ramada Plaza Hotel found, in addition to the illegal poker game, a host of topless beauties dealing out the cards. However, the duties of the 'Angels of Game Night,' also included providing a host of other entertainments designed to get the poker party rocking, and as Lt. Schram explains:
'These topless dealers would perform different aerobic exercises. Twister games for tips, Jello shots for tips.'
Following the raid, 20 gamblers were arrested, including four of the topless dealers, one of whom was completely stripped down to her birthday suit. They are now due to make a court appearance at Kentwood District Court on Jan. 26, where they could receive a maximum of 90 days in prison. The Detroit man accussed of running the game may not get off so lightly, though, as police are seeking a two year warrant for his part in the whole affair.
Following the raid, the hotel's owner Norman Leslie, was quick to distance himself from the incident and explain that when the room had been booked the hotel was unaware that any illegal activity was planned. He said: 'We value our relationship with the City of Kentwood and its leaders, and the community in which we serve and as such, we have made changes to our event evaluation process to ensure 100 percent that this will never happen again.'
